Tips

This page gathers what belongs to no single workflow page: the interface’s general habits, the most common misunderstandings, and what to do when something does not look the way you expected.

Whatever is tied to one page is described there, and only referred to from here; this page repeats nothing.

The interface language

The Builder’s interface is bilingual throughout: English and Hungarian. You switch with the globe icon in the top bar, and on a narrow screen with the menu’s Language row. Switching reloads the page, and the choice stays in your browser, not in your account. In detail: The screen.

What the language switch does not do, and that is not a fault either:

  • It does not translate your own data. The names of your games, sets, items, rules, groups and brands are what you wrote. On the bilingual fields the interface language decides which version shows, and if that one is empty it falls back to the other.
  • The rules editor’s language tabs show their own language (English, Magyar), because they are not about the interface but about the rule’s text. That is as it should be.

The game’s details covers a game’s bilingual data.

Built for a desktop machine, but it does start on a phone

The Builder assumes a mouse, a keyboard and a wide screen, but the interface is designed down to 390 pixels: below 1024 pixels the sidebar becomes a drawer, the modals come up from the bottom, and the set editor’s panel becomes a sliding page. In detail: The screen.

Why serious work still needs a desktop machine:

  • The mouse-driven actions have no substitute: rearranging by dragging, Ctrl and Shift selection, and placing magnetic dots.
  • The Side by side view in the rules editor is not available below 1280 pixels.
  • You have to swipe sideways for the table view’s columns.
  • The image library and the set’s gallery ask for a lot of room, and two columns fit on a phone.

Saving: there is no button

This is the Builder’s habit that causes the most misunderstanding, so it is worth thinking through once:

What you editHow it savesWhen it reaches a player
The Details page’s fieldsby itselfstraight away
The text of the rulesby itselfwith the Publish button
Sets, items, sizes, order, subsets, magnetic dotsby itselfin a release
The uploaded imagesat once, with the uploadin a release, through the items
The name of a brand, a domain, a groupwith its own Save button on the page or in the modal

The top bar shows the state of the save: All changes saved, Saving…, or on a failure a Retry button. You can leave the page without worrying, the Builder saves the pending changes first; a question only comes if the save failed.

In detail: Draft and versions.

There is no scanning

GreenCloth carries the idea of a card scanner, but there is no route to it anywhere in the Builder’s interface today: no menu item, no button, no address. If you see somewhere (in an old plan, in a presentation) that the set page has a “scanning” tab, that is out of date.

Today you bring items in from images, see Items.

Common misunderstandings

What you would thinkWhat is true
What I change in the Builder, players see straight away tooThe Details page, yes. Sets, items and images only in a release, and the rules with the Publish button. See Draft and versions
A rule is part of a releaseNo. A rule goes live with the Publish button, independently of any release. See Rules
My draft is in my browser, on another machine I start from scratchNo. The draft is on the server, and is the same from anywhere. See Draft and versions
The language chooser sets my game’s languageNo, the interface’s language. A game’s two languages are separate fields. See The game’s details
An image belongs to the set I uploaded it intoNo, to the game. Every set picks from the same library. See Images
After “Public” anybody can find the gameIt does not get into the controller’s game chooser. See Making it public
I will be able to bring a deprecated release back to publicNo. After a deprecation the Visibility menu disappears from the row. See Draft and versions
My plan limits nothingIt does: storage, the number of games and groups, the size of a group. See Account
Once I add the game to the group, members can play with itNot until you switch the Play right on in the ceiling. See Playtest group
A size is only needed for printing, not for a releaseNo release starts with an item that has no size. See Draft and versions
If I only change a size, that will be a minor releaseNo. A change of size means a major release and a repack too. See Draft and versions
If I add a game to my group from the sidebar, it will ask me firstIt does not ask, it happens at once. See Playtest group
An organisation role grants access on its ownNo: the role and the game’s ceiling decide together. See Organisations

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to do
An item’s tile says No front imageThe frame has no image assigned. Drop one on it, or choose one in the panel: Items
The Start release button is greyed outThere are four possible reasons, and the modal names every one: When you can release
”Nothing has changed since v…”, but I think it hasThe system does not allow two releases with identical content. If you do need one, switch on Repack anyway: Draft and versions
The release’s images are wrong or incomplete in a partyMake the next release with the Repack anyway switch: Draft and versions
The Public menu item is greyed outThe game has no approved review yet: Making it public
The review’s state does not change, though it was approvedIt does not refresh by itself. Reload the page: Making it public
Request review does not go throughOnly a game’s owner can ask for a review: Making it public
The save indicator says somebody else has changed this tooCopy your text out first, then reload: Draft and versions
It will not let me upload, or the game is Read-onlyThe storage or the game allowance is full: Account
An image will not deleteIt is in use. Take it off the items first: Images
I clicked Sign out and stayed signed in anywayYou have to close the small window that opened: Account
The testers see the game but can do nothing with itThe empty ceiling is the explanation: Playtest group
An organisation member got a role and it made no differenceThe game’s ceiling is needed as well: Organisations
A domain says Not connected, though the page worksYour provider flattens the CNAME: Brands
